How is Vape Juice Made?

Vape juice, also known as e-liquid or e-juice, is the liquid used in e-cigarettes to produce vapour. As we mentioned in our blog introducing e-liquids, it typically consists of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine, and food-grade flavourings. The process of making vape juice involves mixing these ingredients in precise ratios to achieve the desired flavour, throat hit, and vapour production.

Making e-liquid is a lengthy process; some people even consider it an art, like cooking or making wine. Here's a general overview of the process:

  1. Measure the desired amounts of PG and VG according to the desired ratio. Common ratios are 50/50, 70/30, or 80/20 VG/PG.
  2. If using nicotine, measure the desired amount and add it to the PG or VG base. It's essential to handle nicotine with care and follow safety guidelines.
  3. Add the selected flavourings to the mixture. The concentration of flavourings can vary depending on personal preference.
  4. Thoroughly mix the ingredients together. This can be done by stirring, shaking, or using a magnetic mixer. Proper mixing ensures that the flavours are evenly distributed throughout the liquid.
  5. Allow the mixture to steep. Steeping involves letting the vape juice sit for a period of time to allow the flavours to blend and mature. Steeping times can vary from a few days to several weeks, depending on the flavours used.
  6. Once the steeping process is complete, the vape juice is ready to be used. It can be stored in suitable containers, such as glass or plastic bottles with childproof caps, away from heat and direct sunlight.

The specifics of this process may vary depending on individual preferences, equipment, and safety considerations. Commercial vape juice manufacturers usually use specialized equipment and adhere to strict quality control measures to ensure consistency and safety. Due to safety reasons, we do not recommend you try this at home or use homemade e-liquid.

Why does the colour / flavour of e-liquid sometimes vary between batches?

Occasionally, you’ll notice that your favourite bottle of vape juice tastes slightly different. Or maybe it’s darker or lighter than you remember. The colour and flavour variations in e-liquids between batches can be attributed to several factors:

  • Ingredients and Flavourings: The quality and consistency of the ingredients and flavourings can vary between suppliers or batches. Different batches of flavourings may have slight variations in their concentration, composition, or quality, which can result in differences in taste and colour.
  • Steeping and Aging: E-liquids often undergo a steeping or aging process, which involves allowing the mixture to sit and mature over time. During this period, the flavours and other ingredients can interact and develop, leading to changes in colour and taste. Even a slight variation in the duration or conditions of steeping can affect the final product.
  • Manufacturing Processes: The manufacturing process itself can impact the consistency of e-liquids. Factors such as mixing techniques, temperature control, and overall quality control measures can differ between batches. Large-scale commercial manufacturers have more stringent controls to ensure consistency, but even they may encounter some variability.
  • Natural Variations: Some ingredients, particularly natural flavourings or extracts, can have inherent variations due to their source. For example, fruits harvested at different times or from different regions may have subtle variations in taste and colour.
