E-Liquid FAQs

Want to know more about e-liquids? Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions:

What is in vape juice?

Vape juice typically contains propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine, and food-grade flavourings. For more in-depth info about e-liquid, check out our blog E-Liquid - What you need to know.

Why does vape juice lose flavour over time?

Vape juice can lose flavour over time due to:

  • Steeping and Flavour Muting: In some cases, prolonged steeping or excessive exposure to air can lead to flavour muting. The volatile flavour compounds in the e-liquid may gradually dissipate, resulting in a less pronounced flavour.
  • Oxidation: Oxidation occurs when the ingredients in the e-liquid react with oxygen. The oxidation process can break down or alter the flavour compounds, resulting in a diminished or altered taste.

  • Heat and Light: High temperatures can accelerate the breakdown of flavour compounds, while UV light can degrade or alter the flavour molecules.

  • Expired Shelf Life: Like most consumable products, vape juice has a limited shelf life. Over time, even under ideal storage conditions, the flavour compounds can naturally degrade, resulting in a loss of flavour intensity.

While some flavour loss is inevitable over time, fresh and properly stored vape juice should still provide an enjoyable vaping experience. If you find that a new bottle of vape juice has an extremely weak or nonexistent flavour, it may be worth contacting the manufacturer or retailer to inquire about the issue.

Will vape juice stain clothes?

Vape juice can potentially stain clothes. The staining effect can vary depending on the specific e-liquid formulation, concentration of colourants, and the type of fabric it comes into contact with. Here are a few factors to consider:

  • Colourants: Some e-liquids may contain colorants or dyes to achieve a particular hue. These colorants can transfer to fabrics and potentially cause stains. Vibrant or dark-coloured e-liquids are more likely to leave noticeable stains compared to clear or lighter-coloured liquids.

  • Fabric Type: Certain fabrics are more prone to staining than others. Porous fabrics, such as cotton or linen, can absorb the liquid more readily and are more likely to develop stains. Synthetic fabrics, like polyester or nylon, may be less absorbent and therefore less prone to staining.

It's worth noting that not all vape juices contain colourants, and even those that do may not necessarily cause noticeable stains. Clear or lightly coloured e-liquids are generally less likely to stain fabrics. Accidents can happen, and it's always a good idea to take precautions and act promptly if vape juice does come into contact with clothing.

Why does vape juice turn brown / dark?

Vape juice can turn brown or darken over time due to oxidation. Oxidation occurs when the ingredients in the e-liquid, particularly the nicotine and flavourings, react with oxygen. Colour change can be caused by:

  • Nicotine: Nicotine is a highly reactive compound that can oxidize when exposed to air. As the nicotine in the vape juice oxidizes, it can cause the liquid to darken. This effect is more pronounced in e-liquids with higher nicotine concentrations.

  • Flavourings: Some flavouring compounds can also undergo oxidation. Certain flavourings, especially those derived from natural sources, can be more susceptible to oxidation than others.

  • Heat and Light: Exposure to heat and light can accelerate the oxidation process.

  • Steeping: Steeping or aging is a common practice in e-liquid preparation. During this process, the ingredients interact and undergo chemical changes, which can contribute to colour darkening over time.

It's important to note that slight colour changes in vape juice are normal and don’t affect the quality or safety of the liquid. However, if the colour change is accompanied by off-putting odours, tastes, or signs of degradation, it is advisable to discard the e-liquid as it may have exceeded its shelf life or become compromised.

Is vape allowed on planes?

The regulations regarding vaping on planes vary depending on the airline and the specific rules of the country or region in which the flight operates. However, as a general rule, vaping is not allowed on planes.

Most airlines have strict policies prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices on their flights. This policy is in place for several reasons, including potential disturbance to other passengers, scent-sensitivity, and maintaining a nicotine-free environment.

Furthermore, many countries and regions have implemented regulations that restrict the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices, both on planes and in airports. These restrictions are typically in line with existing regulations on tobacco products. If you are unsure about the specific rules regarding vaping on a plane, it is best to contact the airline directly or consult their official website for accurate and up-to-date information.

Can vape juice freeze?

Vape juice can freeze under certain conditions, particularly if it contains a high concentration of vegetable glycerin (VG). VG has a lower freezing point compared to propylene glycol (PG) and water, which are other common components of vape juice.

When exposed to extremely low temperatures, especially below freezing point, the VG in vape juice can solidify and form ice crystals. This can affect the consistency and performance of the e-liquid. The expansion of the freezing liquid can also potentially cause bottles to crack or leak.

Freezing vape juice does not necessarily render it unusable or unsafe. Once thawed, the e-liquid should return to its original state and be suitable for vaping, as long as it hasn't been exposed to any other adverse conditions. However, the freezing and thawing process may impact the overall quality, flavour, and consistency of the vape juice.

To prevent vape juice from freezing, it's advisable to store it in a cool and dry place, away from extreme temperature fluctuations. Avoid leaving e-liquid in a vehicle during cold weather, as temperatures inside a car can drop significantly. If you anticipate being in freezing conditions for an extended period, consider taking precautions such as insulating the vape juice or storing it in a temperature-stable environment.

How to tell if vape juice has gone bad?

Vape juice can go bad over time, especially if it's been stored improperly or past its expiration date. Here are some signs to look out for to determine if vape juice has gone bad:

  • Unpleasant odour: If the vape juice has a strong, unpleasant smell or an off-putting odour that differs significantly from its original scent, it may indicate that it has gone bad. The aroma may resemble a sour or rancid smell.

  • Change in colour: Significant changes in the colour of the vape juice can be an indication of deterioration. While slight colour variations over time are normal, if the liquid has turned noticeably darker, murky, or has developed an unusual hue, it could be a sign of degradation.

  • Altered taste: Vape juice that has gone bad may have a noticeably different taste or an unpleasant, stale flavour. If the liquid tastes off, harsh, or simply doesn't match the original flavour profile, it's likely no longer in optimal condition.

  • Separation or clumping: Vape juice should have a uniform consistency. If you notice clumps or separation of the liquid into distinct layers, it may indicate that the ingredients have started to degrade or the mixture has become unstable.

If you encounter any of these signs, it's generally best to err on the side of caution and avoid using the vape juice. When in doubt, it's advisable to discard the questionable liquid and replace it with a fresh supply.
